Requirements

  • Complete a prerequisite "ADA Basics" course.

  • Complete 40 training credits approved for the Certification Program.

  • Demonstrate mastery of content through an on-line examination.

  • All requirements must be completed within three years of ADA Coordinator Training Certification Program registration.

Prerequisite course providing a basic outline of the ADA.

The National ADA Symposium pre-conference "Basic ADA Overview" session will meet this requirement. The requirement may also be met by completing an on-line web course "ADA Basics".

Completion of 40 credits approved for the ACT Certification Program as outlined below:

Foundation Level—18 credits total (Description of Required Content for Training Topics)

Required Training Topics-13 credits
• Role of the ADA Coordinator (2.5 credits)
• Self Evaluation & Transition Plans (5.5 credits)
• 2010 Standards for Accessible Design (2.5 credits)
• Title I Guidelines (2.5 credits)

In addition, complete training on 2 of the topics listed below.--5 credits
• Effective Communications (2.5 credits)
• Emergency Preparedness (2.5 credits)
• Public Rights of Way (2.5 credits)
• Reasonable Accommodation (2.5 credits)

Electives-22 credits

Training applied toward elective credits must cover a specific ADA related topic. Examples include “ADA and Higher Education” or “Recreation Accessibility Guidelines”. Applicants are not required to complete foundation credits before elective credits.

Electives must be completed from at least five of the categories listed below:

  • Accessible Information Technology/Assistive Technology
  • Accessibility Guidelines & Regulations
  • Disability Community Issues
  • Higher Education
  • K-12 Education
  • Recreation
  • Title I: Employment
  • Title II: Equal Access to Programs and Services of Public Entities
  • Title III: Equal Access to Goods and Services
  • Transportation
  • Other Issues (Eg. Needs of Rural Communities, Travel & Hospitality)

Training Sources:

Trainings may be completed through on-site workshops, webinars, on-line courses, conference sessions, and audio-conferences.

Trainings on requirement and elective topics from the ADA National Network Centers, Job Accommodation Network, and federal agencies including the U.S. Dept. of Justice, EEOC, U.S. Access Board, and the U.S. Dept. of Education will be automatically accepted toward the ACT Certification Program.

Trainings offered by other organizations may also be applied toward the ACT Certification Program. However, applicants must submit information regarding the training to the ACT Certification Program for review before credits are awarded in order to ensure the training meets the criteria established by the ACT Certification Program.

Procedure for Submitting Trainings

Applicants must submit a Training Approval Form for each training they wish to apply toward their certification. Forms must be submitted within six months of completing the training.

New registrants to the ACT Certification Program may submit relevant trainings completed one year prior to registration toward their certifications. ACT-CP reserves full right to deny or accept trainings completed prior to registering to participate in the program.
